The Descent of the Ego: Moving Inward on the Spiritual Path

Returning from a trip to the hills, I notice something curious. There is always an attempt to climb, but rarely an attempt to descend. The climb is exhausting, full of struggle and effort. The descent, in contrast, is easy, effortless. And yet, the man seeks only to climb. Perhaps it is because climbing reinforces the spiritual ego, while descending is the immersion of the ego, the ending of the “I” and the true beginning of the spiritual journey.

But the path of spirituality is the opposite of this modern thinking. Here, it is not the climb but the descent that matters. The goal is not at the heights, but on the slopes. True progress is not about reaching peaks—it is about moving inward, letting go, and sinking deeper into the totality of being to discover profound inner peace.

In spirituality, it is not decadence that matters, but profundity. It is not effort that counts, but spiritual awareness. It is not practice, but ease. It is not about reaching anywhere, but about joining this totality, merging into the whole.

Yet man has been trained otherwise. He has been taught to rise, to conquer, to achieve. And in this training, spirituality is lost. Thinking increases, but consciousness fades. The hyperactive mind becomes so full of noise that the vessel cracks.

To descend from the mountains of stupor is to awaken from the illusions of the world. To descend is to recover, to return to the depth of reality, to let the ego dissolve, and to rest in the effortless flow of consciousness. To experience this profound descent and true spiritual awakening, join us on our inward journey at the upcoming meditation camp, the Mahāprāṇa Dhyāna Śivira. From the Discourses of Suvvidhi
